Urmila was born and raised in a village called Thavakombu in the Dindigul district. Like most parents, Urmila’s parents wished to see her married and arranged her marriage to Lakshmanan, a soldier in the Indian Army.

Just as the newlyweds began their life together, the Pakistan Army intruded into the Kargil region. Lakshmanan was called to the battlefield, while Urmila remained behind, waiting for his safe return.

திண்டுக்கல் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள தாவிகொம்பு என்னும் ஊரில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்தவள் ஊர்மிளா. அனைத்து பெற்றோர்களையும் போல ஊர்மிளாவின் பெற்றோரும் அவளுக்கு திருமணம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என எண்ணி இராணுவ வீரணான இலட்சுமணனை திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தனர்.

இருவரும் அவர்களது வாழ்க்கையை தொடங்கும் போது பாகிஸ்தான் ராணுவம் கார்கில் பகுதியில் கால் பதித்தது. லட்சுமணன் போருக்கு கிளம்பினான். அவனது வருகைகாக காத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தாள் ஊர்மிளா. ஊர்மிளாவின் காத்திருப்பின் விளைவு என்னவாக இருக்கும் என்பதை இக்கதையில் காண்போம்.
